Van Leasing Review :

The Vauxhall Astravan

Lorraine takes a look at the new Vauxhall Astravan Sportive to see what’s new and answer that all-important question – could this be the perfect van lease for you?

Vauxhall Van Leasing

Modelled on the Vauxhall Astra estate, the uniquely sized Astravan has created a nice little niche for Vauxhall and has become a popular choice amongst van drivers across the UK. Today we take a look at the new Euro 5 compliant Astravan Sportive, which is the top spec configuration of the vehicle and offers a number of additional features as standard.

Size Matters

As it’s modelled on the Astra estate car, the Astravan is a size and shape that has proved a very popular choice in the small van market. The Astravan is actually a great size and is a perfect van/car hybrid for those drivers and businesses only requiring a small commercial vehicle. But actually, with a 1.6m3 capacity, 1700mm load length, 1374mm width and 610kg payload, the Astravan is more than big enough to cater for many commercial purposes.

The only problem the Astravan’s strange shape presents is when loading and unloading. It’s nothing major but with a rear loading door and no side-loading door you might have to climb inside to make the best use of the 1700mm load length!

Creature Comforts

Being based on a car, you won’t be surprised to hear that the Astravan has refined features and a car-like feel that you don’t often find in a commercial vehicle. This includes a real quality feel in the cab - even down to the finer details including pop-out and pop-in dials and controls.

There’s plenty of room in the spacious cab for both driver and passenger and even on longer journeys the Astravan offers all the comfort you need. This is even more apparent in the Sportive configuration, which comes fitted with extremely comfortable adjustable sports seats and an adjustable steering column. Other features that comes as standard in the Sportive configuration include Sports steering, roof rails, half-height bulkhead, metallic paint, body-coloured bumpers, air conditioning and ABS.

On the Road

The new Euro 5 compliant engines in the 2012 Astravan Sportive are a real step up from the ones they’re replacing. Both new engines are 1.7CDTi and offer either 110ps or 125ps. Both engines provide plenty of torque and power – even when you’re carrying a full load. As well as this, these new engines are more efficient and can get up to 60mpg, which is pretty impressive for a small commercial vehicle. Again, because of its car-like feel and low centre of gravity, the Astravan handles brilliantly – gripping to the road, with balanced steering and no excessive road noise in the cab.

The Verdict

So, is the new Vauxhall Astravan Sportive the perfect van lease or van contract hire deal for you? If you’re in the market for a small van then it has to be a big YES! Ok, so loading and unloading could be a bit easier, but overall it’s a fantastic van that offers great specifications and features as standard, a refined feel, a brilliant drive and to top it all its now Euro 5 compliant. Overall it really is a great van leasing deal.
