A Bit of Ford Transit History

1950s Transit Van

The Ford Transit’s name was actually the result of a last minute change. It came from the German-market Taunus Transit van and was originally intended to be called ‘V-Series’. It launched in 1965 and was lovingly nick-named in Germany as ‘Schweineschnauze’ or ‘pig snout’. Ford has given the Transit multiple upgrades and facelifts since then and is now the modern vehicle we know and love today. This timeless van has been at the fore-front of the commercial motor industry for over half a century and it has done so for a reason. Although the Chassis Cab, Transit Custom and the Transit are now made in Turkey there was a time when the Transit was built on UK soil which gave the average Brit a sense of pride to have involvement in putting together this amazing piece of machinery. It just goes to show how timeless this van is since it still continues to dominate the current commercial vehicle market.

Engine, Fuel and Emissions

TDI Ford Transit Engine

The Ford Transit now comes with a six speed gearbox as standard across the range paired with a choice of three powerful 2.2ltr TDCi engines, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive transmissions. With a choice of 100, 125 or 155ps and up to 385Nm of torque you get impressive pulling power and fewer gear changes to make your journey an easy one. All these benefits allow the Ford Transit to meet stringent European emissions standards. But don’t worry if diesel engines aren’t your thing, the Transit range is available with a 145ps petrol engine too. The various technological advances on the Ford Transit, such as Smart Regenerative Charging, make this modern Transit’s hardcore, powerful engines even more fuel efficient. In addition to all this, the ECO Pack option includes an Auto-Start-Stop system, so no fuel waste when you are stuck in traffic or waiting at lights. This unique and imaginative engineering gives you amazing fuel economy , impressively low-emissions and instant comfort and warmth, whatever the weather!

Transit’s Load Carrying Ability

Ford Transit Carrying Capacity

There’s a huge variety of possibilities within the Ford Transit range, with a payload ranging from 2.6 to 4.3 tonnes, front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The three roof height options and four wheelbase lengths mean when you lease a Ford Transit van, it can be tailored to exactly what you need without any compromises. There are also readymade minibuses and various other styles of van. Panel vans can carry loads from around 850kg to 2000kg+, with heavy duty models upgraded from single to double rear wheels and an option to upgrade to a heavy duty front axle for extra load bearing capacity if you need it. There’s also a maximum trailer plate of up to 3.5 T. Regardless of what you need to carry, whether it be small tools or high value cargo you deserve to have them protected. The Ford Transit does this with solid, resilient locks and a profound alarm system.

Different Models of the Transit

Transit van 2015 model

There are various different Models of the iconic Ford Transit with more than a few permutations. For instance, you have the panel van which is a large box that sits on top of the chassis and holds your cargo as you go. Then you have the Double-Cab-In-Van. This van has an extra row of seats which means up to six people can make the journey with ease, along with any tools, boxes or whatever it is you need to carry. Next is the Ford Transit Chassis Cab which gives you the opportunity to tailor your vehicle to your specifications and optimise its utilisation. You can also get the Ford Transit Double Chassis Cab which has all the benefits of the Chassis Cab with the extra manpower of three extra people all transported safely and comfortably. If you have a small fleet of people to transport from A to B, have no fear because Ford has made the Transit Minibus. This has all the benefits of the Panel Van but makes sure you carry everyone to the destination safely with the trustworthy, ingenious engineering that is Ford. In addition, Ford Transit also provide the smaller Custom which is a Medium sized van for those of you who need to carry less but still require the same reliability. Finally, Ford Transit also provides the Transit Connect, the smaller van in the range, nippy and perfect for those journeys into crowded town centres.

Your Own Ford Transit Comfort

Within the cab, Ford really has invested their time, effort and money. From the multi-adjustable steering wheel to a dash that gives you that feeling of style instead of pure functionality. You can see that this is a van you would happily spend your time in because everything is suited to you. The gear stick is placed with the most convenience in mind, there is increased shoulder room, copious amounts of headroom, high visibility and you have a mass of options to choose from when it comes to the console. Listen to your music how you want to, have the air conditioning changed at the touch of a button and even connect your phone via Bluetooth so you are hands-free and more importantly, safe. You have a van which is practical, hard wearing and yet, every button and storage is within touching distance, resulting in the driver being more comfortable and relaxed on those longer journeys. We want everyone to have this level of quality, so even if you are a new business starting out we can help.
